The Kongowea Slum

Most of the children that come to Upendo Care International live in the Kongowea Slum of Mombasa, Kenya. Here are a few pictures of what life is like for our children outside the walls of UCI.

Laundry hanging on the line to dry. One house often holds about five families (25+ people) in Kongowea.

Water shortages exist all over Kenya, but slums are the most affected. The yellow barrels carry clean water to residents of the slum.

A couple of men are at one of Kongowea's shops, talking with the owner and purchasing mandazis. Most residents earn less than one dollar (USD) a day.

School Days at UCI

Diana (right), a volunteer teacher, together with Irene Wanjiku (left), UCI's director, is practicing the alphabet with her students in one of UCI's new classrooms.

UCI's red and white uniforms were donated by Melinda Elkins from Cosmic Volunteers in 2012 - Thank you, Mindy!

The children practice as they stand near the alphabet wall, professionally designed and painted by Steve, one of UCI's friends and volunteers.

Diana writing on the board in class. The children practice identifying letters, sounds, basic vocabulary, and pronunciation with volunteer teachers. The class sings the alphabet, a song about household items (in English), and finish the hour with a, 'fun,' song that recites the children's names.

Welcome to the UCI Blog!

Welcome to UCI!

We are a community-based project which offers help and care to the orphaned and destitute children from Kongowea and neighbouring impoverished areas of Mombasa, Kenya. We currently have over fifty children that attend our nursery education program as well as our nutritional support. From 7.00 am - 1.00 pm every week day, UCI teaches and supports children between the ages of three to ten years. The support we provide takes an average of three years to prepare children with the skills and knowledge necessary to enter primary education.

UCI stands out by giving those families who can not afford to send their children into basic nursery education an opportunity to do so.

UCI welcomes you to learn more about us and what we do as we begin posting news and events about our projects.

If you are interested in volunteering or donating to UCI, please contact me at upendocaremombasa@gmail.com. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Irene Wanjiku
UCI Director
