The Kongowea Slum

Most of the children that come to Upendo Care International live in the Kongowea Slum of Mombasa, Kenya. Here are a few pictures of what life is like for our children outside the walls of UCI. 

Laundry hanging on the line to dry. One house often holds about five families (25+ people) in Kongowea.

Water shortages exist all over Kenya, but slums are the most affected. The yellow barrels carry clean water to residents of the slum.

 A couple of men are at one of Kongowea's shops, talking with the owner and purchasing mandazis. Most residents earn less than one dollar (USD) a day.

School Days at UCI

Welcome to UCI!

We are a community-based project which offers help and care to the orphaned and destitute children from Kongowea and neighbouring impoverished areas of Mombasa, Kenya. We currently have over fifty children that attend our nursery education program as well as our nutritional support. From 7.00 am - 1.00 pm every week day, UCI teaches and supports children between the ages of three to ten years. The support we provide takes an average of three years to prepare children with the skills and knowledge necessary to enter primary education.

UCI stands out by giving those families who can not afford to send their children into basic nursery education an opportunity to do so.
